Emotional Manipulation (Narcissistic Abuse) Q&A 1 – 5

Emotional Manipulation (Narcissistic Abuse) Q&A 1 – 5

Question 1

  1. Someone, who anticipates your needs, is:

a) a manipulator (man or woman);
b) a victim of emotional manipulation (narcissistic abuse);
c) someone who loves you.

Question 2

  1. Someone, who gives you wellbeing, serenity and safety, is:

a) a manipulator (man or woman);
b) a victim of emotional manipulation (narcissistic abuse);
c) someone who loves you.

Question 3

  1. Someone, who behaves in an economically responsible way towards you, is:

a) a manipulator (man or woman);
b) a victim of emotional manipulation (narcissistic abuse);
c) someone who loves you.

Question 4

  1. Someone, to whom you can entrust what is dearest to you, is:

a) a manipulator (man or woman);
b) a victim of emotional manipulation (narcissistic abuse);
c) someone who loves you.

Question 5

  1. Someone, who tires and wears you out, is:

a) a manipulator (man or woman);
b) a victim of emotional manipulation (narcissistic abuse);
c) someone who loves you.

Answer 1

If you are in a healthy relationship, someone who anticipates your needs is someone, who takes care of your needs and loves you.

If you are in a bad relationship, the cases are two.

  1. He or she is a manipulator, who wants to dupe you.
  2. He or she is a victim of your manipulations, which fears being abandoned and does everything to satisfy you, with the risk of losing his or her dignity.

Answer 2

Someone, who gives you wellbeing, serenity and safety, is someone who loves you and makes you feel “at home”.

Manipulators, men and women, love to keep their victims on tenterhooks, between ups and downs, on purpose.

Victims of emotional manipulations (narcissistic abuse) transmit, and make heavy, their own anxieties and fears, often unknowingly.

Answer 3

Generally, economically responsible people are people, who put into practice values and principles of economic sustainability. For example, they evaluate the ratios quality/price and cost/benefit, consider expenses and investments in the short, medium and long term. They avoid waste. They have the wellbeing and the needs of their loved ones and of future generations at heart.

So, someone, who behaves in an economically responsible way towards you, is someone who loves you. He or she takes care of your needs. He or she acts in a timely, equitable, and balanced way, and by mutual consent.

Manipulators, men and women, want to meet their immediate needs. They spend and waste to impress their victims or strangers. They keep their savings only for themselves. They make promises and postpone, or swallow. They impose economic privations on their victims to scare them and to subdue them.

A victim of emotional manipulation (narcissistic abuse) is engaged in economically meeting the needs of manipulators, men and women, in a priority way, even without knowing it. He or she can be economically exploited and deceived.

Answer 4

Someone, to whom you can entrust what is dearest to you (for example: house, family members, animals, goods, and savings), is someone who loves you. He or she will take care of them with diligence and good sense.

Manipulators (men and women) are focused only on their needs and on what they want to achieve. They could take possession of your savings. They could neglect or damage your goods artfully.

Generally, a victim of emotional manipulations (narcissistic abuse) is a dependable person. It is for this reason that the manipulator (man or woman) has chosen him or her, but the dependence on them could be too strong. Or, the manipulator might have any interest towards you. In both cases, your goods or your loved ones, if entrusted to the victim, could be in danger.

Answer 5

Someone who loves you, makes you feel well, excites you, and helps you in making your wishes come true.

Someone, who tires and wears you out (“energy vampire”), could be either a manipulator, man or woman, or a victim of emotional manipulations (narcissistic abuse).

Manipulators, men and women, swallow good mood, joy, proactivity, and optimism literally. With their constant criticisms and complaints, they grieve and weaken the people they interact with, even physically. Also when they are cheerful, they know how to leave bitterness in your mouth. They are capable of sabotaging the projects of their victims.

Victims of emotional manipulations (narcissistic abuse) are inclined to repeat some of the usual behaviors of their manipulators. If the dependence is strong, also the victims are ungrateful, catastrophic, disheartening, and caustic.

The Propolis of Rosario

To be free from emotional manipulation requires care, attention and simple daily actions.

Natural remedies are among these attentions, which you can choose according to what you like the most and consider the most effective for your case and for your personality.

Let us know them better.

Today it is the turn of the Propolis of Rosario.

Rosario Sica is a herbalist, according to his own definition: a health farmer! He devotes himself to the handmade production of food products with particular focus on apiculture and medicinal products. He could speak for hours (and he does it) tirelessly advising and proposing holistic solutions for wellbeing. He likes to launch educational workshops on the herbal world and on bee-keeping. His Mission? To change the world, starting from himself.

Question: “How, when and why have you become fond of this natural remedy?”.

Answer: “I have been making an incessant use of propolis since I had the honor to try it for the first time in 2010, produced by my “Godfather of the bees”. It saved me several times from flu symptoms”.

Question: “What are its main benefits?”.

Answer: “As time passed, I discovered that it contains several vitamins and minerals useful to the proper functioning of our immune system, the flavonoid galangin that is responsible for the anti-inflammatory and antibiotic function, resins that promote tissue healing, and powerful antioxidants that provide an anti-tumor and anti-aging activity”.

Question: “What simple use could you suggest us for our health?”.

Answer: “Its intake is very simple. The hydroalcoholic extract (in my opinion the most effective) is often found in small amber-colored bottles with a specific dropper, you just take from five to ten drops of it directly on your tongue or mixed in a teaspoon of honey to sweeten their taste. You can also apply it directly and locally on wounds, infections, herpes, and aphthae”.

Question: “What is your personal message for those who want to break free from manipulation?”.

Answer: “Our wonderful and delicate body needs energy to be able to carry out its functions. Being a food technologist, the first thing that comes to my mind is the sentence of Feuerbach: We are what we eat. The food is one of the methods that we have available to derive the energy that is necessary to our body in order to live, but it is not the only one. We can obtain energy from the surrounding environment, from the universe, from plants, from other people, and from the achievement of our goals. Being ignorant of the matter, I dare to believe that, in order to avoid finding ourselves in an emotional manipulation, we need to learn how to draw in a balanced way from all these forms of energy at the same time, so that we can be independent as much as possible without ever having to depend on any of them. I would recommend reading a book that expresses this concept in a more thorough way while being easy to read: The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield”.

Thanks Rosario!

Propolis for internal use belongs to that one per cent of me that is not yet completely vegan. For external use, I found some worthy substitutes of it that are completely vegetable. I am still looking for a natural, and not of animal origin, antibiotic and antiviral, which has its same spectrum of action, its effectiveness, its timeliness, and its power. Rosario uses organic methods with his bees. For instance, you may not know, but also the bees can have small parasites in their hair, called varroa, that are similar to lice. He eradicates them with slow rhythms, blocking their growth and propagation, without using pesticides and preserving their and our health.

The opinion of Francesca, a reader of Holistic Solutions to Emotional Manipulation

Here is a collection of some voices from readers, men and women, on the book “Holistic Solutions to Emotional Manipulation”(*) a year after its publication that took place on October 17, 2015.

Let us see what Francesca ’68 thinks.

Question: “What induced you to read the book?”.

Answer: “A chance encounter with the author during a public event was the beginning of a long and painful path of awareness about how harmful emotional manipulations are. She submitted me to the self-assessment test of page 25 (where I had obtained a very high score) and commenting on the answers by reading the responses to the test, I realized that I had the absolute necessity to understand what was happening to me. The next day, I ordered the book “Holistic Solutions to Emotional Manipulation” on Amazon and, from that moment, I became aware of having a relationship with a narcissist, who submitted me to all his retaliation and conditioning in order to have control, and that I underwent everything in order to silence my fear of abandonment, a wound that I have been carrying with me from my childhood. I could not understand what was happening to me, because whatever I did was useless and I was living a continuous emotional swing, which was worsened by the progressive social isolation, to which the narcissistic partner had pushed me. Reading the book introduced me to a phenomenon which I had no idea and testified to me how you can take back your own life and break these dysfunctional bonds”.

Question: “What major benefits have you obtained from this reading?”.

Answer: “The book has shown me a very useful method to remove forever the author of the manipulation, but also all a series of experiences for one’s soul nurturing to bring again yourself at the center of your own world, and above all to understand that the task of each of us is to learn how to unconditionally love us, so as to be forever free from future relapses. The path is long but it is the only way to go”.

A final thought
If I look back on my life as it was a year ago, I realize how much pain and maltreatment I suffered. Thanks for writing that book. Who knows where I would be now if we had not met at that time”.

Thank you, Francesca!

The Qi Gong of Michelangelo

To be free from emotional manipulation requires care, attention and simple daily actions.

Among these daily exercises there is the practice of one or more holistic disciplines, which you can choose from those that you like the most and consider the most effective for your case and for your personality.

Let us know them better.

Today it is the turn of the Qi Gong of Michelangelo.

Michelangelo Fedi has a university degree in Modern Literature and graduated in Physiotherapy, for over fifteen years he has been practicing Taijiquan and Qigong. He is III duan black belt with the qualification of Wushu Instructor (kung fu) recognized by F.i.wu.k. and by CSEN. He holds the Qigong teacher credential with the association OTTO. He teaches Taijiquan of the Chen Xiaojia style and Qigong in different locations in Naples (Italy). He is a member of SIPNEI (Italian Society of Psiconeuroendocrinoimmunology). He is president of the Association Piccoli Cerchi (Small Circles).

Question: “How, when and why have you approached this discipline?”.

Answer: “My approach to Qigong occurred around the end of the Eighties without knowing it: at that time I practiced karate and my teacher suggested the class to go over the kata again – a sequence of techniques that you practice on your own – to improve the coordination of movements and balance. Following his advice, I found myself feeling sensations that struck me much: a deep relaxation associated with a perception of vigor, a strong heat in my hands and the sensation of moving in a fluid, into something that was denser than air. For a while, I , instinctively, continued to train this way, fascinated by this manner of moving that had something intimate and mysterious in it at the same time, leaving me with a pleasant wellbeing at the end of the practice. A few weeks later, in a bookstore, I came across a book about the Tai Chi Chuan (or Taijiquan), a martial art that differed because of the slow execution of its techniques, it was a real encounter and that, I believe, was the first book published on Taijiquan (which is a martial art as mentioned, but also a form of Qigong) published in Italy on the subject”.

Question: “What are its main benefits?”.

Answer: “The benefits of Qigong, which in a first approximation can be translated as “exercise of the vital energy” are many, but we must remember that there are many styles and variations, then the effects can be different depending on what you practice. In summary, I partially anticipated them in the previous answer: relaxation, recovery of energy, well-being, but also an improvement of the immune response and a contribution in solving various psychosomatic disorders. Not only. It is currently receiving increasing attention from the Western science, which is evaluating its effects also in the treatment of pathologies such as rheumatoid arthritis. In China in the Fifties of the twentieth century, they began to adopt it in hospitals in the treatment of tuberculosis and in the acceleration of convalescence from various diseases. Moreover, Qigong is part of the Traditional Chinese Medicine and then, in its variation of Medical Qigong, it is potentially included in every therapy formulated on the basis of its diagnostic criteria. For myself and in relation to the style that I practice more, the Zhan Zhuang Qigong, it is essentially a way to get closer to myself and to my own internal resources”.

Question: “What simple exercise could you suggest us for a daily practice?”.

Answer: “Highlighting that in general it is appropriate to learn Qigong from a qualified teacher and that the exercises must be calibrated on the individual person, I can suggest a very simple and effective one that brings great benefits when regularly practiced: to rub your hands until they become hot, then to keep them resting on your abdomen feeling the warmth of your hands on it. Five or ten minutes of this practice regularly done are an excellent approach to Qigong”.

Question: “What is your personal message for those who want to break free from manipulation?”.

Answer: “My personal message is: “Do not fall from the frying pan into the fire”. Qigong is an extraordinary and natural practice, however, like other disciplines originating from the East, it is often surrounded by an aura of mysticism and of generic spirituality, which leads to see the teacher as a kind of guru, of an outstanding figure. This distorted investment on the teacher is so much easier when you are fragile, as it happens when you are involved in dynamics of emotional manipulation. In such cases, you have to remember that the solution of your discomfort does not lie in investing unrealistic expectations in the practice of a discipline, whatever it would be. In the same way, you should distrust those teachers, who want to be celebrated as “Masters” and establish manipulative relationships, of control and power, on their students. Realizing it is often not easy, but if you see them as superior beings and they introduce themselves this way, something is wrong and it would be a good thing if you change your path”.

Thanks Michelangelo!

About ten years ago, for a few months, I had enthusiastically practiced Qi Gong with another very good teacher. It has been a pleasant surprise to find it again with Michelangelo. I have been also able to better appreciate and understand it, with the experience and the practice acquired over the years in the field of holistic disciplines. Now I can feel its nuances, which before I could not appreciate. It was like finding again a dear one, whom I had lost sight of.

The anti-violence, women’s, center of Clara

To be free from emotional manipulation requires care, attention and simple daily actions.

A help, for people who suffered violence even though only psychological, could be the support of anti-violence, or women’s, centers, which you can choose from those that you like the most and consider the most effective for your case and for your personality.

Today, we are going to know the anti-violence, or women’s, center of Clara.

Clara Pappalardo has a university degree in literary subjects and has been a teacher in junior high school from 1967 to 2006. She has been a member of the Provincial Board of Directors of CGIL (an Italian labor union) School from 1986 to 1995 and has held the role of the Head of the Western Zone of Naples (Italy) and of its province for CGIL School. She has been the President of the Association “Arcidonna Napoli” from 1995 to January 2016. Currently, she is the vice president. Till to-day, she has been holding the position of Director and Coordinator of the Anti-Violence Center of the City of Naples since 1997, the year of its establishment. She is an expert in training and planning, she edited popular publications on gender violence.

Question: “How, when and why have you become fond of this subject?”.

Answer: “First of all, I can not consider it a subject because gender violence, being founded on the unequal distribution of power between men and women, not only weaves the history of our relations but the personal and social daily life of each of us. Therefore, it is an inherent interest in being a woman, although the awareness of the causes and of the need for change occurs and matures in various stages of life, which sometimes are also discontinuous. For me, the awareness was born in the 70s at the time of the feminist movement and of self-consciousness, but has developed and turned in the willingness to act in a targeted and specific way in the 90s, when I became a member of Arcidonna, which, since a long time, had been promoting awareness campaigns in schools and in vain had been trying to speak with the local authorities in order to open a shelter house for abused women also in Naples. In 1997, various associations that dealt with anti-violence in Naples decided to downsize their sacrosanct demands and submitted a project aimed at creating an Anti-Violence Advice Center at the Women’s Center of the City of Naples. The project was approved and funded for nine months and was entrusted to Arcidonna as the leader. In the following years, from 1999 up to now, the Centre has been kept alive thanks to the free and voluntary work of various operators and practitioners, who have placed their experience and expertise to the disposal of the other women, allowing a continuity of operations that the funding by fits and starts of the Municipality would never have assured. In the meanwhile, in 2011, finally they opened the first Shelter House for abused women of the City of Naples, “Fiorinda House”, which allowed the women of Naples to have an opportunity to get away from the place of the violence and to stay in a protected space, where they could find the time and the resources needed to rebalance and to re-plan themselves”.

Question: “What is the main help provided by an anti-violence center?”.

Answer: “An anti-violence center managed by female associations offers a place to women subjected to violence, where they are listened to and accepted in an empathetic and supportive manner by other women free from prejudice and non-judgmental; a place where they are accompanied by experienced people to gradually make clarity within themselves and to make the decisions, which each woman considers as the most appropriate to safeguard herself and, often, to find herself again.
The woman takes her bearings with the help of the operator defining a customized plan, which can lead her to exit from the situation that afflicts her. The plan can include the psychological support, the legal advice and assistance, the career guidance, the activation of an inter-institutional network of services, ranging from social and health assistance to services relevant to safety measures, such as police and courts. However, in an anti-violence center, the woman never loses the centrality of the decision-making process: it is up to her to decide if and when to report, what are the services to be used and what are the strategies to be implemented in order to face the violence. This is essential, because the recovery of self-esteem can only happen if you leave space and awareness to self-determination”.

Question: “What simple suggestion could you provide us to be practiced every day?”.
Question: “What is your personal message for people who want to break free from manipulation (narcissistic abuse)?”.

Answer: “I am going to answer to these two questions all together, because the suggestion and the message are similar. In my opinion, a woman must never think in front of a violence, both psychological and physical, to have the responsibility of that violence. She must not think that it will be enough that she changes so that the violence ends, because it is not so. The origin of the violence is not inside her, but it is outside. She should only try to cope with it, if she can and feels up to do it, or to distance her from it. We must never forget that our dignity is inalienable and we must not allow anyone, not even the person who we love the most, not even a son, to trample it. At any price! It is the best way that we have, not only to feel good about ourselves, but also to induce the other individual to look within himself and to improve his relationship with the people around him and with life”.

Thanks Clara!

I met Clara in the summer of 2013, when the anti-violence center was near Palazzo Donn’Anna in Posillipo, when a stranger more heavily tormented me with his daily unwanted irruptions in my life and after that the reports had only proved to be a needed bureaucratic step. There, I spent one of my most intense, most painful, but also most beautiful days. I met many volunteers, operators and expert practitioners, who were able to listen to, to understand, to explain, to clarify and to really help. There, in the waiting room, I met many women, many stories, much suffering and a single wish: to have their life back.

However, I invite you not to confuse violence with emotional manipulation (narcissistic abuse). Dynamics, motivations and effects are very different. In my case, for instance, they have been the harassing actions of a stranger to bring to light the family emotional manipulation. According to this document of the Police (only in Italian), what happens to me can be described as a sadistic behavior, in which the victim is the subject of an obsessive thought and is seen as a prey, she is considered an individual to be ruined because perceived as happy and fulfilled. In this context, usually, no plausible explanation exists in the perception of the victim about the reason why she has been taken aim at. The initial level of acquaintance is low, the kind of approach is initially benevolent, later on becoming increasingly persecutory. The systematic infiltration in the life of the prey aims at creating disconcertment and nervousness, and is implemented with very high emotional coldness. The persecutory behavior can be addressed to all the people close to the victim, in an attempt to isolate her. Sometimes, it is just the latter who moves away from family members or friends, to avoid exposing them to danger. Threats can be explicit or shifty. Damage to property of the victim can happen. These people can be very dangerous, especially for the psychological violence. Some behaviors have a sexual matrix and are mainly intended to humiliate the victim, to disgust her, and, in general, to undermine her self-esteem. This is a case to be taken into serious consideration, since the conduct of the stranger could not independently stop. It can be counterproductive to directly turn to the persecutor in order to induce him to cease the harassing behavior which, however, would be denied.

Despite these awful events, manipulators (narcissists), men and women, can act as nothing has happened, are insensitive and merciless and demand that attention is focused only on them.

The Plantar Reflexology of Emilia

To be free from emotional manipulation requires care, attention and simple daily actions.

Among these daily exercises there is the practice of one or more holistic disciplines, which you can choose from those that you like the most and consider the most effective for your case and for your personality.

Let us know them better.

Today it is the turn of the Plantar Reflexology of Emilia.

Emilia Doarme is a holistic operator and practices, together with various techniques of massage (relaxing, lymphatic drainage, revitalizing, skin-reinforcing), Reiki and Plantar Reflexology, which promote mental and physical balance and re-acquisition of an overall health situation.

Question: “How, when and why have you become fond of this discipline?”.

Answer: “I am fascinated by these disciplines because they consider the human being as a union of body, mind, emotions, and spirit. The Plantar Reflexology became a passion since I solved the problem of my son: he had been suffering from migraine for years. In about two months, we were able to defeat it”.

Question: “What are its main benefits?”.

Answer: “The uniqueness of the method. It stimulates the self-healing powers that are latent in our body. It transmits an influx of positive and vitalizing energy. It reduces the side effects of cancer treatments. It reduces stress and tension, inducing a state of relaxation. It stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation. It strengthens the immune system”.

Question: “What simple exercise could you suggest us for a daily practice?”.

Answer: “The exercise that I recommend is skimming over the inner bone plantar arch: it generates a movement of transformation of old mental and behavioral patterns, which are no longer needed. It brings an overall sense of greater energy and inner strength. It helps you to gain confidence in relationships and in the expression of yourselves”.

Question: “What is your personal message for those who want to break free from manipulation?”.

Answer: “In order to defend yourselves against manipulators, you do not need to have a ready answer, but to be aware of your value, to work on your emotional response, to remain lucid, to discern, not to be struck. Let us make every possible effort to remain focused not so much on our ideas, which may change, but on our ability and autonomy of reasoning”.

Thanks Emilia!

I met Emilia for the first time in January 2011 and have always appreciated her passion for plantar reflexology, which many people confuse with a normal foot massage. I have never directly experienced it, because I must confess my personal aversion to massages in general. However, about ten years ago, by chance, I was given a wooden foot massage roller for single foot. From the package, a strange instruction sheet with a colored picture came out, which put the various zones of our foot in correspondence with the different parts of our body. This tool, a little uncomfortable in its use, is  excellent in stimulating blood circulation and introduced me to a useful discipline, which was unknown to me until then.

The Dentosophie of Isabella

To be free from emotional manipulation requires care, attention and simple daily actions.

Among these daily exercises there is the practice of one or more holistic disciplines, which you can choose from those that you like the most and consider the most effective for your case and for your personality.

Let us know them better.

Today it is the turn of the Dentosophie of Isabella.

Isabella De Magistris is a doctor, dentist, specialist in kinesiology applied to dentistry and gnathology and posture, but above all a … DENTOSOPHER.

Question: “How, when and why have you become fond of this discipline?”.

Answer: “I “met” the Dentosophie more than ten years ago while I understood, thanks to the various master’s and training courses in posturology, the connection between the mouth and the rest of the body. But for me, who have always thought that we are the physical expression of our emotions, of our life, the mere assessment of the physical state of a person was limiting. So, Dentosophie came to “help” me, connecting our teeth with our emotions and, ultimately, expressing who we are and what we feel”.

Question: “What are its main benefits?”.

Answer: “The main benefits are at the postural level, both for the mouth and for the rest of the body, they are emotional, because thanks to the use of the activator people can meet their conflicts and solve them; they are rehabilitation of wrong postures of the tongue and of incorrect (oral) breathing, and orthodontics”.

Question: “What simple exercise could you suggest us for a daily practice?”.

Answer: “I would suggest to practice breathing exercises, especially those that promote the release of the diaphragm”.

Question: “What is your personal message for those who want to break free from manipulation?”.

Answer: “I think that we must believe only in ourselves. The only God existing is inside of us, so we are the craftsmen of what happens to us in our life, because when we think we are creating what later will be manifested to us. Let us remember not to judge other people, both because they are our mirror, that is what we reflect on the outside, and because everyone is making his or her journey to regaining his or her awareness, and every life is a different story. Have a pleasant life”.

Thanks Isabella!
